Zoom or prime lenses

​ Prime lenses may not be universally better than zooms, but they generally have important advantages in terms of aperture, sharpness, and contrast.  With these lenses, the connection between focal length and composition is also more obvious, which makes it easier to understand composition issues. A normal lens has a focal length equal to the diagonal of the imaging format. For 135-film (24×36 mm) this means about 43 mm, for 110-film (13×17 mm) about 20 mm, and for 120-film (60×60 mm) about 80 mm. Lenses with these focal lengths are called 'normal' because when a picture taken with a normal lens is viewed, objects in the image appear normal, i.e. neither stretched nor compressed in depth. A telephoto lens has a focal length greater than the normal. It can be a tool for bringing distant objects closer and isolating them from their surroundings. Some differences between 110-film and 120-film.

After being preoccupied with 135-film (24×36 mm), I wished to revisit other formats briefly. I took the below pictures with a Pentax Auto 110 for 110-film (13×17 mm) with an 18 mm lens and a Rolleiflex 2.8C for 120-film (60×60 mm) with an 80 mm lens.  The Pentax picture, on the left, is taken using Orca 100 ASA, and the Rolleiflex picture, below, is taken using Fomapan 400. Both films are processed in Rodinal 1+25 for 5:30 minutes. Considering the small frames of the 110-film, I am surprised by how good the Pentax photo is. I expected it to show much more grain and much less detail.  But there's more to it than that. The impression of the two images is different, and compared to the Rolleiflex image, the Pentax image appears flatter, partly because the Pentax image object (the row of fishing huts) is more distant than the objects in the Rolleiflex image.  However, the difference in focal lengths also have effect, but comparisons of focal length need to account for differe...

​Is your camera radioactive?

Some camera parts, such as lenses and viewfinder prisms, can be radioactive, at least if they are produced during the 1970s or earlier. Back then, some optics manufacturers added thorium oxide to the glass to improve the optical quality, mainly to achieve a high refractive index and low dispersion. However, thorium 232 is radioactive, and as it decays with age, the radioactivity increases. Although thorium itself only emits alpha particles, its unstable daughter products also emit alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. Nevertheless, it is generally believed that the radiation levels typically are negligible and do not present health risks during normal use.  The Cyberphoto Blog provides a list of known radioactive lenses and in some cases the measured level of radiation  in terms of  µ Sv/h. I've experimented with various developers, including Caffenol. This photo was developed using what's known as Caffenol CL.  The Digitaltruth recipe is described below. Caffenol CL Water  1000g Baking Soda   12.6g Sodium Hydroxide 6g Ascorbic Acid 10g Potassium Bromide 0.5g Instant Coffee 40g Development time: 1 hour. First continuous agitation for 30 seconds, then stand development. According to the blog caffenol.org , several other foods can also be used to develop film. Here are a few examples: Beerol 250ml Beer 2 tsp Washing Soda 1 tsp Vitamin C Wineol 400ml Red Wine 40g of Washing Soda 10g of Vitamin C Ajvarol 4 tsp Chutney 3 tsp Water 3 tsp Washing Soda 1 tsp Vitamin C Beetrootol 250ml Red Beetroot Juice 2 tsp Washing Soda 1 tsp Vitamin C Experimenting can be fun, but I’ll stick with Rodinal from now on.

Bulk loading 135 film

Bulk loading has advantages, not least regarding cost and the freedom of selecting any length of film, but it can be problematic. Daylight bulk loaders are sometimes difficult to load with bulk film. Scratches on the film loaded into canisters are not unusual, and the bulk loader may jam the film during the loading of film canisters.  ​However, there is an alternative. This punch tool makes it easy to attach the film to the spool of a reloadable canister without tape, which often is stuck on something else than intended.    With some training, it can be used even within a darkroom changing bag. Once the film is attached to the canister's spool, film can be loaded into the canister in the changing bag with the help of a small plastic crank handle. About 30 turns give a 30 exposures film. Identifying a Rolleiflex

Several years ago, I bought my first twin-lens reflex Rollei. The Rolleiflex was produced from 1929 until 2014, and it was not always clear when accumulated minor modifications turned one model into another. In fact, it can be quite difficult to identify the model and production year, information that may affect the value of the camera. Mine had an 80 mm f2.8 Carl Zeiss Planar lens, and it needed a CLA, but the seller didn't know much else about it. However, last year the 350-page book "The Classic Rollei — A Definitive Guide" (Ammonitepress) was published by John Phillips, a Rollei aficionado. The book is full of information on Rolleiflex and Rolleicord cameras. With its help, I found quickly out that my camera was a Rolleiflex 2.8C, and the Carl Zeiss lens indicated that the camera was either produced in 1954 or the first half of 1955. It was also mentioned that 2.8C was not considered one of the more attractive models because of the "somewhat fussy appearance...

Real cameras make people nervous

In the old days, before smartphones existed, not many people carried a camera with them, and when they did, it wasn’t a big deal. Almost everyone has a smartphone with a camera these days, but not many carry a rangefinder in a strap around the neck, which seems to make a big difference. Real cameras make people nervous. A few weeks ago, I took my Voigtländer Bessa R2m along on the dog walk to try out a new wide-angle lens from 7artisans. As I walked past a house where gardening work was taking place, I was suddenly stopped by a man in a mini-tractor who had caught up with me. He asked me aggressively what I was photographing and why. Did the neighbours disapprove of what he was doing? Did they want proof that something was damaged? I was quite taken aback and wasn’t prepared for such a discussion, but explained that I was just trying out a new lens. My dog sensed the tension in the meeting, fixed the man with his gaze and began to growl. The man then decided to drive back to the house...
